Lives Interrupted
One moment can destroy your life.
What begins as an ordinary summer day in London, ends with devastation as an explosion rips through the underground.
Matthew has been fired, and Rosa is struggling to cope as their debts spiral out of control, but she has a plan. One that she can’t tell Matthew. Meanwhile his choices will wreck their lives in a way they never imagined.
Life is tough, but how much worse could it be?
A bombing on the underground answers that question. Death and injury affect them as they struggle to survive, but those first few hours are only the beginning.
They will never be the same, but can they learn to live with this new life they never chose?
Lives Interrupted is an emotional rollercoaster that will appeal to fans of Jodie Picoult and Anita Shreve.
One moment can change your life. One moment that takes everything. That leaves nothing as it was.
People you will never know. Their decisions take what was, and leave you with now.

Shauna Bickley's second novel, 'Lives Interrupted' examines how one unexpected incident, in this case the 2005 London bombings, can 'interrupt' the direction of lives, affect how the world is viewed and change the course of relationships. Bickley sets up the 'before-the-bombing' lives of each of the seven key characters then skilfully and realistically brings each of them to the actual day; some directly affected, some indirectly, but all, as a result, changed, the projectory of their life forever altered. It was for me, however, Bickley's development of how each character copes with the trauma after the bombing, that really grabbed my attention. None sentimental, although with the character of Francine the opportunity to 'milk' the pathos was there, or with Dru, the doctor we could have been taken into the hospital wards and had horrific injury after horrific injury foisted upon us.
Instead, Bickley has taken us into the lives of these characters and simply allowed us to be part of their day to day existence after the bombings. They make decisions, not all good or wise, but nevertheless, decisions that are understandable under the circumstances.
Bickely has captured the essence of a major traumatic incident and drawn realistic characters who react in different ways, but all in tune with their personality.
My only small quibble is that the ending came too soon, as this was very enjoyable. This is Shauna Bickely's second novel I have read. Her first, 'Driftwood' is very different, but equally as good a read.

Lives Interrupted edition by Shauna Bickley Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
‘Lives Interrupted’ is the story of a group of friends and loosely related people whose lives are forever changed by a bomb blast on the London Underground. It’s an extremely well written book with complex and well drawn characters with very real relationships, reactions, hopes and fears. We can all relate to these people, and reading this book brings home just how traumatic terrorist events can be for those affected. Knowing that there would be a bomb, I read the book almost waiting for it, but due to the skill of the author, it still came as a shock. One moment all was normal, the next, everything had changed. Despite the traumatic subject matter in the latter part of the book, this was a very enjoyable read.
A highly recommended read. 5 stars.
Have a box of tissues handy when you read this book. Bickley has a gift for exploring characters and bringing their flaws, dreams, and pains to the surface in a palpable way. While the size of the cast worried me at first, she handles the multiple point-of-view characters fluidly, interweaving their lives in a way that feels both natural and inevitable as the story progresses.
This book explores multiple ways of reacting to tragedy, each as believable as the next, with even the unsympathetic choices portrayed realistically. While I did not agree with every decision made by every character, I definitely understood why they did what they did. Lives Interrupted is a sobering reminder that we do not know how we will react to tragedy until faced with it, and makes us cherish the people and blessings in our lives. Make sure someone you love is nearby when you read this; you'll want to hug them often.
I love character-focused stories, and this certainly fits the bill. I also love stories that move me, and I am unashamed to admit I sobbed in the middle and had to stop reading to compose myself. It's a powerful read.
Recommended for fans of books about relationships, grief, loss, trauma, and general fiction.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
It was very real. I feel I know England now. Would like to have this continue but I guess that's why it's so good.
Absolutely loved this book! Like other reviewers, once I started I wasn't able to put it down and read it in two sittings. This is a well-written story of the personal aftermath of the London tube bombings. Having finished this book so quickly I have now downloaded one of her earlier stories and eagerly await her next novel.
Good rendition of the affect that tragedy has on the rest of peoples lives how it can change the course in a split second.
Lives Interrupted is a very well-written reminder of the impact of cataclysmic events, the sort you read about in the newspaper as happening only to others, on ordinary lives of ordinary people, and how those lives are never the same again. It is fascinating, too, to see the personalities change, who becomes what sort of person in the aftermath. Shauna Bickley has portrayed her characters very well and has crafted their changes in a heart-rending and believable way.
I read and enjoyed Bickley's first book Driftwood, (conventionally published) but this story shows great advancement in her writing skills. Set in London during a time of recent history, young lives proceed as normal until one unspeakable event "interrupts" them. The event really happened. Few readers will fail to remember it, no matter where they are in the world they are. I was enjoying the lives enough as it was but the interruption adds a whole new excitement, and drama to the stories of the various characters whose responses to catastrophe seemed believable and human. You get the feeling Bickley carefully researched post traumatic stress syndrome. She captures the event itself with great skill, including enough telling detail to capture the true horror but without going overboard with the gore. The writing flows smoothly and the book has obviously been expertly edited to keep it free of typos and other annoyances so common among those many indie authors so much less professional than Shauna Bickley. This author is going places.
